Imagery Rescripting (ImRs)

Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) is a therapeutic technique that focuses on visualizing and changing loaded (memory) images. By reducing the impact of disorder-related memories or feared events, psychological symptoms can be alleviated. A significant life event or feared experience is essentially rewritten to become a neutral (memory) image without emotional impact.

During the treatment, you imagine a negative event and then rewrite it by either having your therapist or yourself enter the imagined scene and alter the course of the event.

The effectiveness and applicability of this technique are comparable to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As a result, ImRs is not only useful for trauma treatment but also for addressing various disorders and issues where significant life experiences exert an influence. It can be applied to address conditions such as anxiety, depression, aggression problems, somatoform disorders, eating disorders, and low self-esteem.
